Porcelain vs Ceramic Tiles: Which Should You Choose?

Choosing the right tiles for your home can feel overwhelming, especially when trying to decide between porcelain and ceramic. The good news? Both are fantastic options. The best choice is entirely dependent on where you plan to use these tiles and the level of traffic they are expected to endure.

What’s the Difference?

Both porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay fired in a kiln, only porcelain is fired at a higher temperature. This results in harder, denser and less porous tile.

Porcelain is a tougher, more durable option whereas ceramic is a more budget-friendly alternative.

When to Choose Porcelain?

Porcelain tiles are recommended for areas of the home with high levels of traffic, such as busy hallways, the kitchen and bathrooms. They absorb very little water and are resistant to scratches, making them ideal for other spaces such as wetrooms and outdoors.

When to Choose Ceramic?

Ceramic tiles are a popular choice for walls, splashbacks, and rooms with lighter foot traffic. They come in a large variety of colours and styles, and they are generally easier to cut and install, which can help keep installation costs down.

Our Recommendation

If your budget allows it, porcelain is the best all round tile for durability and versatility. However in low traffic areas and on walls, ceramic tiles remain an excellent and budget friendly option.
